Same-Day CEREC Crowns in Redmond: What to Expect, What They Cost, and Who They’re Right For

Cracked a tooth at a client dinner? Had an old filling finally give out on you? For a lot of our Redmond patients, getting a crown was never the hard part. The calendar was. You’d come in to have the tooth prepped, then spend a couple of weeks walking around with an uncomfortable temporary crown while you waited on the lab, then come back a second time to finally get the permanent one cemented in. All that, just to fix one tooth.

At Redmond Signature Dentistry, our CEREC technology lets us design, mill, and place a permanent ceramic crown in a single appointment so you can fix a damaged tooth and get back to your day.

Here’s what same-day CEREC crowns are, what they cost, how they compare to traditional lab crowns, and how to know if one is the right call for your tooth.

What is a Same-Day CEREC Crown?

CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. It’s chairside CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing) technology that takes a digital scan of your prepared tooth, designs a custom crown on-screen, and mills it from a solid block of tooth-colored ceramic right in our office, all while you wait.

The result is a permanent, metal-free restoration that matches the color, strength, and translucency of your natural teeth, with none of the gooey impression trays traditional crowns require.

How Much DO CEREC Crowns Cost?

CEREC crowns are billed as the restoration itself, so most dental insurance plans cover them under the same benefit as a conventional crown. Your exact cost depends on the tooth being restored, whether any additional treatment (like a root canal) is needed first, and your specific insurance plan.

Our team verifies your benefits and walks you through the cost before any work begins. Call us at 425.883.1253 or request an appointment for a personalized quote.

Are CEREC Crowns as Good as Traditional Lab Crowns?

Yes. A CEREC crown and a traditional lab crown can be made from the same high-quality ceramic and deliver comparable strength, durability, and fit, generally 10 to 15 years or longer with good oral hygiene and regular checkups. The difference is the process, not the product: a lab crown takes one to two weeks and two appointments with a temporary crown in between, while CEREC designs and mills your custom crown chairside in one visit.

Benefits and Disadvantages of CEREC Crowns

Benefits of CEREC Crowns

  • One visit, start to finish: No second appointment, no waiting on a lab.
  • No temporary crown: Skip the two weeks of wearing a placeholder that never quite feels right.
  • Natural-looking results: Metal-free ceramic matches the color, strength, and translucency of your own teeth.
  • Built to last: Same high-quality ceramic as a traditional lab crown, with a comparable 10 to 15+ year lifespan.
  • No messy impressions: Digital scans replace the old putty trays.
  • Precise fit: Your crown is designed and milled from your own digital scan, not a general mold.

Disadvantages of CEREC Crowns

Same-day crowns aren’t the right fit for every situation, and it’s worth knowing where they have limits:

  • Not every case qualifies: Teeth needing extensive bite adjustment, or restorations spanning multiple connected teeth, sometimes still call for a lab-fabricated restoration.
  • The appointment runs longer than a routine filling: Because the crown is designed and milled in one sitting, you’ll spend more time in the chair that same day, in exchange for skipping a second visit entirely.

Who Is a Good Candidate for CEREC Crowns

You may be a good candidate for a CEREC crown if you:

  • Have a cracked, chipped, worn, or decayed tooth that needs a full-coverage restoration
  • Want to avoid a temporary crown and a second appointment
  • Have a tight schedule and need treatment completed in one visit
  • Are replacing an old crown or large filling that’s failing

A quick exam and digital scan is the only way to confirm candidacy for your specific tooth, since factors like the tooth’s position and the extent of the damage can affect the best approach.
