Have you been told your smile needs a root canal? It’s okay! There’s no reason to fret because root canal therapy is not as scary as you may think it is. In fact, getting a root canal may be your best defense to saving your natural tooth.

May 7-13 is Root Canal Awareness Week and we’re going to celebrate by taking away the mystery of this procedure. Read our blog to get the answers to the top 5 root canal questions your dentist often hears from patients.

1. What is root canal therapy?

Root canal therapy is needed when a tooth becomes severely damaged by decay or injury. In turn, this leads to an infection inside your tooth, damaging the pulp. During the procedure, your dentist will use safe and efficient tools to remove the infected pulp.

You may need a root canal if:

  • You’re experiencing severe tooth pain.
  • Your tooth is sensitive to hot or cold temperatures.
  • Gums are swelling.
  • The infected tooth darkens.

2. My tooth never hurts. Why do I need a root canal?

Just because you’re not experiencing pain doesn’t mean your tooth isn’t severely infected. A root canal is necessary to save your tooth and to keep your smile healthy.

It’s important to take care of the problem right away before it gets worse. The longer you delay treatment, the more opportunity it is for infection to infiltrate your bloodstream and harm your body. Yes, your oral health is directly connected to your overall wellness. If not treated properly, you increase your risk for heart disease, diabetes, and so much more.

Some other reasons a root canal may be needed include:

  • Your tooth cracked.
  • Your tooth is broken.
  • Repeated dental procedures on the same tooth.
  • Severe tooth injury.

3. Is a root canal painful?

Hearing “root canal” may make you cringe because of the stigma that this procedure is painful. That’s not the case! It’s 2017! Technology has advanced exponentially and you’ll hardly feel it. It feels the same as getting a filling.

Our team will make sure you’re comfortable the entire time. If you need an extra boost, we even offer sedation dentistry.

4. How will I feel after a root canal?

Your tooth may feel a little sensitive after the procedure, but you’ll finally be out of pain! If you’re experiencing soreness or sensitivity, you can take over-the-counter medications.

5. Are there other alternatives?

The only alternative is extracting the tooth. However, there are solutions to replace your infected tooth. A bridge or dental implants are excellent solutions to restore the functionality and beauty of your smile. We’ll ensure your new tooth will look and feel beautiful.
